Industry Leaders Unite to Launch the Sustainable Print Mani…

An industry-wide working group today announces the launch of the ‘Sustainable Print Manifesto’, an independently developed, industry-wide initiative created to provide a simple, practical and universally relevant framework to increase sustainability across all print sectors. The project is grounded in the belief that the print industry must collaborate more, not less, if it is to accelerate progress. Today, too many sustainability efforts remain fragmented - shaped by local regulation, technology limitations, individual company priorities, or regional nuances. The new Sustainable Print Manifesto aims to rise above these silos, offering a globally relevant blueprint for continual improvement, shared learning, and improved collective progress. The manifesto’s purpose is simple: to create a shared language for sustainable print. One that demystifies complexity and empowers every print business to take meaningful action to be more sustainable. Whether commercial print, packaging, wide format, textiles, labels or industrial manufacturing, the Manifesto is deliberately print-agnostic and compatible with any process, technology, or business model. Unlike traditional top-down standards, the Manifesto has no single author. It has been shaped collaboratively through 11 working-group meetings, a multi-stakeholder summit in Valencia, a series of webinars, and multiple in-depth articles. Over the past 12 months, printers, manufacturers, brands, retailers, technologists, consultants, and trade bodies have contributed insight, challenged assumptions, and co-authored a document designed to unify the industry around clear, actionable sustainability principles. Brands and retailers have also been consulted throughout its development, ensuring the document aligns with real-world requirements, expectations, and future-facing sustainability priorities. Rather than replacing the work of associations or existing frameworks, the Manifesto is designed to act as a neutral, unifying north star - one that sits above technical and regulatory silos and is accessible to any business, anywhere in the world. A clear set of 9 practical principles At the heart of the Manifesto is a set of nine practical, non-competitive principles that any organisation can adopt immediately. These principles focus on real-world actions that improve environmental performance today - without large investment or radical operational change. They include: designing print for purpose; producing efficiently; choosing better, lower-impact materials and inks; minimising waste; reducing carbon and energy consumption; improving water stewardship; applying finishing only where it adds value; recycling and reusing operational materials; and communicating impacts transparently using accurate, data-led reporting. Grounded in lifecycle thinking, the nine principles provide a universally relevant, accessible framework that scales for businesses of any size, in any sector, anywhere in the world. Towards a more collaborative, unified and ambitious future As the initiative grows, industry organisations, suppliers, printers, finishing companies, technology providers, and brands are invited to pledge their support. The ambition is to create a global community committed to learning, acting, and helping each other advance sustainable practice - ultimately positioning the print industry as a beacon of responsible innovation for the wider manufacturing world. Representing one of the founding partners, Carlos Lahoz from HP commented: ‘I believe in the value of print and the positive impact it has in the world. But I also believe that there's still room for improvement. To accelerate innovation and progress, collaboration is key. Collaboration built on trust and transparency, towards a shared goal. This is what this manifesto aims for, and this is why I pledge to its principles.’  This commitment to collaborative progress is echoed by many of the organisations backing the Sustainable Print Manifesto. Founding Partners and Supporting Associations To make this independent initiative possible, a group of visionary founding partners have provided financial and strategic support to underwrite its development. These include: HP, CarbonQuota, Gallus, Domino Printing Sciences, FuturePrint, Sun Chemical, Nazdar, Kavalan, io.tt, CPI Books, The PackScout, CIMPRESS, and Bespoke. The manifesto also has the backing of key global trade bodies, including: BPIF & IPIA (UK), VIGC (Belgium), and PRINTING United Alliance (USA). Call to Action The Sustainable Print Manifesto is now available for download, and all organisations within the print and packaging value chain are invited to read it and share it, action its suggestions and even pledge their support. While this document will continue to evolve as the collaboration grows, today it marks a collective commitment from across the industry to create a clearer, more coherent and more impactful pathway towards a sustainable future for print.

Mimaki launches end-to-end UV printing solution for sign and architec…

Mimaki Europe, a leading provider of industrial inkjet printers, cutting plotters, and 3D printers, has announced the launch of a full UV print-and-cut solution, consisting of the large format flatbed UV printer, JFX600-2531 and the flatbed cutting plotter, the CFX-2531. Both solutions will be demonstrated together for the first time at the Mimaki Experience Centre in Amsterdam during FESPA 2024. The flatbed UV printer, JFX600-2531, responds to market demand for a larger print size, following the positive reception of the JFX600-2513 launched in 2021. Offering the same high levels of productivity and maximum resolution of 1,200 dpi, the increased print-bed size of 3.1m in length opens up new possibilities for printers, particularly in architectural applications. Due to the expanded print-bed, the JFX600-2531 is able to print directly on commonly used architectural substrates, such as glass and plywood, which have a standard size of 3,000mm. Printing on these substrates commonly involve applying a printed film onto the surface, so direct printing allows for the original surface texture of the substrate to remain, excluding the design area. Another feature carried over from the previous model is the 2.5D printing function, which creates texture to the surface of the print for added customisability and value. To streamline production further, Mimaki has optimised the ‘Toggle Print Function’ for the JFX600-2531, which allows for simultaneous printing at the front and rear of the print table. Print operators can now set the print origin at two locations, meaning that manual processes, like replacing, fixing and cleaning the surface of a substrate, can take place while the printer continues to print on the other side. This works in conjunction with Mimaki’s core technologies to create a seamless workflow, including the NCU (nozzle check function) and NRS (nozzle recovery function) to reduce downtime caused by missing or faulty nozzles. Expanding Mimaki’s cutting plotter portfolio, the CFX-2531 is a high-end cutting solution which operates with increased speed and efficiency. As a large-size cutting plotter - 3,190mm x 2,540mm – the CFX-2531 can continuously or alternately operate at the front and rear of the table. Offering an ideal solution for various sign graphics applications, the CFX-2531 can handle prints and materials such as stickers and signboards, as well as paper containers and corrugated boards. Improved accuracy, with the inclusion of a table plane tracking function, helps to ensure minimal material is wasted and is critical when it comes to V-cuts. In addition, the cutting plotter can be equipped with up to four types of tools at once to reduce time required for tool changing and adjustment.  The CFX-2531 is part of Mimaki’s brand-new CFX Series, which also includes additional two models - the CFX-2513 and the CFX-2550 - with a print table of 1,300mm x 2,540mm and 5,080mm x 2,540mm respectively. This series is designed for those companies looking to grow their offering, due to the ability to expand the size even after the CFX is installed.  Arjen Evertse, General Manager Sales, Mimaki Europe, explained, “As a pioneer in UV technology, we are pleased to announce a high-quality, high-performing UV printing solution to add to our extensive portfolio, which will serve to further expand upon applications for print service providers. We understand how important substrate versatility is for printers, especially when expanding to new applications, so created both products in response to market demand.  FESPA Global Print Expo 2024 offers an invaluable platform for us to demonstrate the capabilities of this full solution for the very first time, especially as this year’s UV Excellence Partner.” To see a demonstration of this latest print-and-cut solution at FESPA 2024, book a showroom trip via the following link: https://events.mimakieurope.com/showroom-visits.
